Voluntary toe nail cutting service

The service provides nail cutting support to older persons who are genuinely unable to manage their own personal foot care.

WHAT TREATMENT IS AVAILABLE THROUGH THE VOLUNTARY FOOT CARE SERVICE?

Toe nail cutting and basic foot health advice.

WILL A PODIATRIST CUT MY TOE NAILS?

No. You can only access this service if your feet are healthy. Such persons do not qualify for NHS Podiatry care. A Volunteer who has received training by a NHS Podiatrist will provide your treatment.

How to apply

Fill in an application form for the Voluntary Nail Cutting Service available from your local Service Provider or Health Centre.

WHO CAN ACCESS THE SERVICE?

Usually older persons who cannot manage their own nail cutting and do not have a carer to help.

Examples of eligibility criteria:

Persons with a learning or physical disability

  • Visual impairment
  • Cognitive impairment
  • Frail elderly
  • Arthritis
  • Breathlessness

Your feet must be healthy and your toenails must not be severely thickened or deformed.

DO I HAVE TO PAY FOR MY TREATMENT?

Yes, a small fee will be required to cover the cost of equipment and overheads.

WHO SHOULD NOT ACCESS THE SERVICE?

  • Persons with diabetes
  • Persons with poor circulation
  • Persons taking anti-coagulants
  • Persons with severely thickened or deformed toenails
  • Persons with painful toenails
  • Persons seeking treatment for a foot problem other than uncomplicated nail care

If you are an unsuitable candidate for the Nail Cutting Service you may qualify for NHS Podiatry treatment.

I AM HOUSEBOUND. WILL A VOLUNTEER VISIT ME AT HOME?

Regrettably a home visiting service is not yet available.

IF I GET A PAINFUL CORN WILL THE VOLUNTEER TREAT IT FOR ME?

No, the Volunteer is not a Podiatrist and is not qualified to treat your corn. If you require any further foot treatment other than uncomplicated toenail cutting you should contact the NHS Podiatry Department to be reviewed by a Podiatrist. The Volunteer will be able to help you with this.

DO YOU PROVIDE TRANSPORT TO THE CLINIC?

No. You will need to organise your own transport. There may be a local voluntary car scheme operating in your area. Your Nail Cutting Service Provider or GP Surgery may be able to provide you with this information.
